What Are Some Coping Strategies Found Useful by Mesothelioma Victims?

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Mesothelioma is such a disease that affects not only the person diagnosed with the disease, but his or her loved ones, too. The intention to write this article is to offer some resource for patients and their families who are living with this disease. Coping with mesothelioma, unlike other types of cancer, can be significantly difficult. There are few support groups specifically available for mesothelioma. These are quite often informal groups of people who reside in the same area or who occasionally meet each other in doctors’ chambers or hospital waiting rooms. There are larger and more organized support groups for cancer sufferers in general but not for mesothelioma sufferers in specific.

Let’s see how this support groups operates.

Support Groups

The main job of the support groups is to help people, deal with the challenges that they are facing. It is known that over 20% of Americans have participated in some type of self-help group. There are mainly two types of support groups that are available. They are online support groups and community centred support groups. Nowadays in an era of internet the number of online support groups is gradually increasing. It is possible that a support group exists in your community or on-line that can help to provide you the required support.

Support groups may provide several benefits:

* A social platform for getting connected with others who are facing similar situations.

* A platform to know how others have coped with challenges similar to the ones you are facing presently.

* A safe, non-judgmental atmosphere where one can share feelings.

* The reassurance that you are not alone, there are other’s too who have either suffered in the past or is undergoing the same presently.

* A platform where you can reliably share information.

* A source of reliable Support from others who understand from personal experience what you are going through

Incidentally there are different types of support groups that are available. This includes groups with strong focus on a particular disease such as mesothelioma, groups of caregivers, and family-centered groups.

Some of the Characteristics of a successful group are as follows:

* A mix of participants from various age groups.

* Honesty of purpose

* A caring atmosphere

* A sense of trust should prevail among members

* A good facilitator

* Members should abide by the group rules, including confidentiality.

Apart from joining support groups, a patient should be encouraged by his family members to remain relaxed and try to focus on the bright side of the life. A patient should not feel depressed and emotionally drained. The family members or the caregivers should create a healing environment and encourage the patient to think positive. There are lots of inspirational books that tell how people are fighting mesothelioma and other life-threatening diseases. Meditation is another way to keep your mind distracted from morbid thoughts and tension.

Uterine Cancer

Women Over 50 More Likely to Develop Uterine Cancer

It is not known why some women develop uterine cancer, but scientific studies on what causes one woman to develop uterine cancer and another to not develop it are constantly ongoing. However, there are certain risk factors that are known put some women at a higher risk for developing uterine cancer. For those who develop uterine cancer, there are different treatment options, but most involve a hysterectomy. Unfortunately, despite the fact that it may cure (or at least help) a person’s uterine cancer, a hysterectomy can affect a woman in both a physical and emotional way.

Risk Factors for Developing Uterine Cancer

There are about five factors that put you at a greater risk for developing uterine cancer. If you are a woman, and you’re over the age of fifty, you are automatically at a higher risk of developing uterine cancer. Other factors include, undergoing hormone replacement therapy, being overweight, suffering from diabetes or high blood pressure, having a history of other types of cancer, of if you are Caucasian. Interestingly, if you are a woman who has never been pregnant or have never had a child, you are also at a higher risk of developing uterine cancer.

How is Uterine Cancer Treated?

Depending on the size of the cancerous tumor and the stage of the uterine cancer, different uterine cancer treatments are available. Your doctor will discuss all treatment options with you and will go over the possible side effects of each. In most cases, treatment for uterine cancer begins with surgery or a complete hysterectomy, which is a complete removal of the uterus. After surgery, it is possible that you may have to undergo additional treatments including, radiation, chemotherapy, and/or hormone therapy.

Hysterectomies are More than the Removal of the Uterus

When you undergo a hysterectomy, as a result of her having uterine cancer or for any other problem or disease related to the uterus, you must deal with both a physical recovery and an emotional recovery. The physical part of the recovery is a result of the pain that comes from having gone through surgery (although some hysterectomies do not require an incision). The emotional part of the recovery is usually due to you feeling depressed after the uterus is removed. Once it is removed, there is obviously no chance that you will ever be able to have another baby. This may not be a major factor to women who are at the greatest risk of developing uterine cancer because they are typically over the age of fifty. Nonetheless, it is always an emotional experience when a part of the body is removed due to cancer.

Herbal Colon Cleansing

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

There are many different herbal colon cleansing recipes or diets that claim to be able to perform a colon cleansing that is almost as effective as the rest of the options. This is certainly a possibility. If you try some of the diets that are out there, you will find that it is a good alternative. But you can add some herbal supplements to these diets to make them even more effective, and therefore even more appealing as an option.

Most of the colon cleansing diets are based on the idea of adjusting your fiber intake based on what problem you are dealing with the most. If constipation is your issue, you can increase your fiber intake. If diarrhea is your issue, you will decrease it. For mild cases of either of these things, this will help you.

Some of the time, you won’t be able to fix a problem just by changing how much fiber you eat. This is when you will want to start getting into some of the more exotic herbal remedies that have more specific roles. There are different herbs that are composed in a way that they will break down all of the exact things that are causing intestinal problems.

If you know what your exact problems are, you will know what herbs you need to get by just doing some quick research. But unfortunately, it is almost impossible to determine a specific problem. Usually there will just be the fact that you are suffering from constipation or diarrhea, and that is all you have to go on. In this case, you will want to try out one of the products that successfully combines all of the herbs.

This type of medicine is widely available as a one-size-fits-all intestinal relief pill. You can have them prescribed from a physician, you can look at a drug store, or you can simply get on your computer and look for websites that sell them. Each brand has had years of accumulated research poured into it, and therefore is most likely more effective than any other herbal blend that you could concoct.

The reason these herbal colon cleansing treatments are so effective are because of how they attack the problem on all levels. The intestinal problems can arise from many different types of buildups, and each one takes a different herb to break it down and get it moving again. The herbal medicine blends all of these together, so even if you suffer more from one problem than another you will still be able to alleviate both.

If you are interested in trying some herbal medicines in order to get your digestive system working better, you should first read reviews of all of the top leading brands. When you hear about the personal experiences of other people who have tried the same thing, you can decide for yourself whether you feel comfortable trying an herbal colon cleansing product.

Lymphoma Symptoms

Friday, December 28th, 2007

One of the most important factors in determining the survival rate or chances for remission of cancer patients is early detection. Some cancers where this is very true include breast cancer and prostate cancer because early detection of the disease makes it easier to treat since the cancer is usually just found in one localized area. With regard to lymphomas, the same principle applies; early detection of lymphomas has been proven to lead to higher survival rates. The key to early detection is an awareness of symptoms that indicate the presence of a lymphoma. Fortunately, research on this topic is extensive and provides a wealth of information that can help people detect the symptoms of lymphoma.

Some Common Symptoms

Almost all lymphomas exhibit some general and specific symptoms, which depend largely on the type of lymphoma. One of the most common symptoms among lymphomas is the swelling of lymph nodes, which often occur in the upper body. These swollen nodes are not painful, which is what distinguishes it from an ordinary case of an infected lymph node, where the swelling comes with pain. Other common symptoms include a lack of energy and dramatic weight loss. Due to the effects that lymphomas have on the immune system, increased incidences of fever and infections are also another common set of symptoms among lymphoma patients. Other symptoms include night sweats and itching deep in the skin.

Some of the more specific symptoms include lower back pain, which could be the result of the enlarged lymph node impinging on some nerves, pain in the lymph nodes after alcohol consumption, and skin patches or lesions. In addition to these symptoms, one of the most common ways by which this disease is diagnosed is through routine x-rays; these machines are powerful enough to detect any swelling in the lymph nodes of a person.

As with any cancer, early detection can also increase the chances of survival for a person who suffers from lymphoma. Given this, people need to be aware of the symptoms that they should look out for to help them detect the disease early and to get the appropriate treatment. Fortunately, the extensive research on lymphoma and it systems allow people to do just that.

First Signs of Lung Cancer

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Lung cancer is a major killer of men and women across the country. Air pollutants, secondhand smoke, cigarette smoking especially, and other causative factors contribute to the disease.

Most of us think that the lung cancer is mostly common among the cigarette smokers and it is true that the vast majority of cases are or were smokers. But there are non-smokers do get lung cancer and smokers who don’t get it.

Signs of lung cancer are often not apparent in the early stages. However it is better to identify lung cancer as possible.

The most common early symptom of lung cancer is haemoptysis (coughing up blood). Consider this early symptom a warning sign of a cancer, which may be curable.

If you find that you are coughing up blood, you should immediately contact your doctor , especially if you are 40 years of age, or older, with a long-term smoking habit.

Some of the primary signs include:

* Hacking, persistent cough

* Coughing up blood

* Shortness of breath

* Wheezing

* Chest pain

* Lost appetite

* Lost weight

* Recurring bronchitis or pneumonia

The above symptoms also being the symptoms of many other lung problems, so it is always advisable to see a physician to ascertain the cause

Secondary signs of simple cell lung cancer include:

* Weakness

* Difficulty swallowing

* Changes in nails

* Hoarse or raspy voice

* High fever

* Swelling of facial features

It’s true that most symptoms of lung cancer do not show themselves until the disease is in its advanced stages.

However, sometimes people exhibit signs early in the disease’s development. It is imperative that the first notice of symptoms or concern sends you straight to the doctor.

The sooner treatment is begun, the better. A cure is possible if caught early enough and, if not, then a better quality of life and more of it.

When lung cancer spreads to other parts of the body, organs and bones, referred to as ‘metastasizing’, signs and symptoms include:

* Aching and sharp bone pain

* Changes in the brain that exhibit themselves through weakness, numbness, dizziness, and seizure

* Jaundice (whites of eyes, nails, and skin yellow

* Masses near the skin’s surface

* Headaches

* Numbness and loss of sensation in your extremities

All of these signs and symptoms of lung cancer may be caused by other health problems. The only way to know for sure is to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Online Cancer Support Groups - A Must For The Cancer Patient

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Patients often wonder if they can use the internet for other purposes other than researching cancer treatment and information.

In fact, one of the additional benefits of the internet is that it allows people with common interests or problems from all over the world to share their experiences in online support groups. This applies to cancer, of course, and there are many online cancer support groups for almost every type of cancer.

These internet-based cancer communities are a potential goldmine of information. Think about the opportunity.

Imagine that you were in a room of 500 other patients who had been diagnosed with the same disease that you’re researching. Some may have been diagnosed recently. Others may have been diagnosed a few years previously.

Everybody in that room would have gone through the process of researching various cancer therapies, talking to other patients, and talking to medical specialists. Many of these cancer patients would have researched the latest research from the conventional medical establishment.

Some in the room would have also researched the alternative and so-called natural cancer treatments available.

Many people in the room would have already undergone treatment and would be in a position to comment on how effective the treatment was and what side effects they experienced.

People may comment on how they were treated at a top medical center and you would be able to compare it to the treatment you may be about to receive at your medical center.

A good online cancer support group is the internet equivalent of being in that room with 500 other patients.

But, like most things in life that have a lot of potential benefit, there is a potential downside.

The downside is that although patients’ personal stories may be extremely informative, you must remember that learning about one other person’s experience does not mean that everybody will have the same experience.

You should use these forums as an opportunity to get a sense of what the controversial issues are and what avenues other highly motivated patients are pursuing in their research.

Then, you should combine the information you’ve gained from the online forums with the more scientific and credible information that you’ll have searched for at the major government cancer sites.

The best forums are moderated though so that no one can blatantly pitch commercial products or cures that they intend to profit from. These moderators read every post and suspend the privileges of any one who disregards the policies of the list.

These online cancer support groups are so valuable that you may want to join a number of them. But, I would be wary of any non-moderated list which seemed to have a lot of commercial messages.

In the final analysis, it’s probably best if you combine all the information you have received from all the different types of searching you have done, and sit down with your doctors for an informed discussion.

Avoiding and Preventing Cancer: Simple Steps to Take

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

With its fairly unique characteristics, cancer strikes intense fear in many people and all would like to find ways to preventing and avoiding cancer. Obviously, any disease that is a) fatal, b) incurable and c) derived from unknown causes will earn a position of esteemed concern among the general public.

The faulty basis regarding the incurability of cancer is something you will find in my most recent book, but for now let us acknowledge that most people believe this to be true.

Cancer is a unique illness, in that it is created within our cells, by our cells. Damaged DNA causes a cell to divide without limits, producing more cells with damaged DNA that divide without limits. Soon, the cells create a massive tumor which is often fatal. Is it really possible to avoid and prevent cancer? The most reliable medical treatments for cancer are essentially poisonous. We poison our body, depending on the fact that the cancerous portion will perish first. This theory has proven itself workable, though it often generates effects which are as lethal as the cancer.

Luckily for us, our bodies were created with an inherent set of tools, our immune system, designed to keep illness from settling in and destroying us. Not so luckily for us, we live in an age where the maintenance of those tools is incredibly poor.

To increase the abilities of our immune system and ensure that it can do its job, we must strive to be as healthy as possible. Our immune system will help us prevent and defeat disease, but it won’t do it all by itself: we must be willing to help. There are indeed some simple steps you can take to avoid and prevent cancer. After all, if we don’t care enough about our health to fight for it, why should our immune system? If you do care enough to fight for it, how do you go about it?

Start exercising. This is actually one of the cheapest, easiest and potentially most effective tactics we have in promoting a healthy, active and forceful immune system. We make it hard, even though it doesn’t need to be. There is no need to join a health club or purchase fancy equipment.

If you have stairs in your home, spend 15 minutes a day walking up and down them. Do sit-ups and push-ups. The key is to do something, which will always be better than doing nothing regarding exercise.

Eat better. While there may not be a scientifically backed study indicating that a regular diet of deep fried fast food causes cancer, it has certainly been linked to a variety of health problems. Remember that any health problem drains your immune system which, in turn, makes you more susceptible to other health problems.

I’m not suggesting that you become a vegetarian and start shopping exclusively at organic health stores, although you may want to look into those options. But you may stop giving into the so-called “easy” way of eating.

Look at it from a new perspective. Certainly, every time you pick up a quick dinner at the local grease market you are saving yourself the time and trouble of preparing a healthy meal.

What’s really happening with those “savings,” however, is that you’re stashing them into a “time bank.” Like most savings, that time earns interest. In this case, the interest you are earning is pain, problems and suffering. When you finally withdraw all of that saved time, later in your life, you have to withdraw the earned interest as well.

Reduce stress. Stress is a massive immune system inhibitor. It comes at you from all angles, in every direction and with varying intensity. Recognize the sources of stress in your life and then work on healing them. A great number of options exist to reduce stress, you simply need to find the one that works best for you.

Of the options, one that is particularly viable to the prevention and avoidance of cancer is meditation. Drop the images you may be having of monks in robes. Meditation can be done in a very secular way, with no dogma attached.

Simply sit undisturbed in a comfortable position while visualizing your self at the peak of health. When your mind strays, as it will, from the visualization of yourself at peak health, all you need to do is simply bring it back.

After practicing this for awhile, you’ll find that your mind hardly drifts at all. You’ll also find yourself feel much better than you’ve felt in a long time, and it won’t even cost you a penny. This simple step could indeed be the start of avoiding and preventing cancer. Visit www.alternative-health-ebooks.com for more information and free articles. Reflexology and Chemotherapy

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Reflexology is a gentle non intrusive treatment carried out upon the feet alone, using reflex points that correspond to the body systems.

Reflexology is highly beneficial in alleviating adverse side effects of chemotherapy, by helping the patient to deeply relax, it also helps to reduce the level of anxiety, helping patients cope with the distressing symptoms of pain and nausea, the results reveal that treatments produce a significant and immediate effect on the patients’ perceptions of pain, nausea and relaxation.

There is a myth that because reflexology rids the body of toxins, that the chemotherapy won’t work properly. There is no evidence to support this and there is a wealth of evidence about the positive results patients have felt.

Many people who have cancer and who have used Reflexology say that they find it helps ease some of their symptoms or helps them cope with the side-effects of treatment. Other people say that they just find it a very pleasant way of relaxing.

Reflexology is used by many people under going treatment for cancer, and Reflexology is included at complementary therapy centres within cancer units at Charing Cross Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Harley Street Clinic, and Lister Hospital as well as being offered at many Macmillan cancer relief hospices and day care centres, with very good results.

Many patients say that as well as enjoying the relaxation and stress relief they also feel able to cope with the physical side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Its also an important factor in having time for themselves and a person to talk to that is not a part of their family and in many cases, being able to voice their problems and fears without worrying about the effect on close relatives or friends.

Reflexology is a good treatment for helping those that suffer with lymphoedema (swelling of limbs) after surgery to remove lymph glands, as it helps improve circulation and lymph flow and the Reflexologist can work over the specific reflex points for the effected area. In some cases the limb affected with lymphodeoma can be quite painful, Reflexology is very gentle and effective and in such cases is a good compliment to lymphatic drainage massage.

Overall Reflexology helps to improve the circulation and lymph flow, which benefits all body systems and organs and aids deep relaxation and better respiration and mobility, helping patients to relax and cope with the physical side effects of their treatment.

A Closer Look At Colon Cancer

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Cell multiplication goes along with the development of the human body. Once the complete development is achieved, this process stops. By then, new cells are only created as the need for them arises. But if this process continues at an abnormal rate, cancer is likely to develop. This cancer cells will invade neighboring tissues. If this condition happens in the intestinal lining, a disease termed as colorectal cancer begins, betterly known as colon cancer. Colorectal cancers normally start as benign polyps that soon develop into cancers.

Fortunately, colon cancer is easily detected and has great potentials for removal if diagnosed at an early stage. Surgical treatments can be enforced even until the cancer spreads to the lymph nodes. And the success of undergoing chemotherapy to cure the colon cancer is impressive. Though this is true, the fact that colon cancer stands as the second most prevalent cancer remains to be the cause of higher death rates among cancer victims. The earlier estimate for the survival rate of a colon cancer victim is around ninety percent and higher. But this figure radically changed after the year 2004.

People with greater risks of developing the colon cancer

Western societies are more prone to the dangers brought about by the colon cancer. The reason pointed out for this condition is that Western people have diets lacking in the necessary nutrients needed by the body and the healthy foods that are normally eaten in other parts of the world. Diets in highly industrialized sections of the West are much worse. Foods typically come short with the components found in fruits, vegetables and proteins.

Additionally, smokers who regularly smoke around 20 cigarettes or more on a daily basis are found to have 250% possibility of developing the colon cancer. Drinkers have 87% more chance of acquiring the disease as opposed with nondrinkers. And if these two ill practices are combined then the likelihood of developing polyps rises to 400%.

Men are found to have greater risks in developing colon cancer than that of the female population. Colored women, mainly black, have greater likelihood of developing the disease. And drinkers, smokers, obese and sedentary individual have potential risks for polyps growth.

Sadly, colon cancer is hereditary. If a person in the family is found to carry the condition, then the first-degree relatives may have colon polyps as well.

Prevention

There are strong evidences that high calcium contents in a person’s body reduce the risk against the colon cancer. Again, another good sources of prevention against the disease are the vegetables. The phytochemicals found in certain vegetables are noted to have great effects against the development of the polyps. Daily exercises also go a long way in controlling the risk for the cancer.

Aspirin is known to reduce the potentiality of the growth of the colon polyps and the colon cancers as well as the cancer of the esophagus and the stomach. A regular 325 mg of daily aspirin intake may be sufficient to outbalance a person’s risk. Though it must be noted that aspirin may cause intestinal bleeding and ulcer. Lower incidence of colon cancer is also attributed to the daily consumption of 1500 mg of Calcium.

The future of the colon cancer is yet to be defined. Yet the current trend of developing the disease is not yet as aggravated as with other deadly diseases and luckily enough, there are great improvements towards earlier diagnosis of the condition. Like with the majority of health condition, the rule of thumb continues to be- stay healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Detecting Kidney Cancer

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

In order for you to understand kidney cancer more completely, let us first look at the description and functions of the kidneys. Kidneys are basically the organs in the body responsible for producing and then ridding the body of, liquid waste substance known as urine. The kidney is able to perform this function because of the filtration that occurs in millions of nephrons in this organ. The kidneys are also designed in such a way that it can remove the liquid waste substances but return the filtered liquid to the blood stream and thus it allows the body to retain its water balance. It should also be noted that there is a special hormone that is made in the pituitary gland that controls and regulates the water content in the body.

Kidney cancer is a very dangerous and painful disease in severe cases. However, you should also remember that everyone has two kidneys in the body and if one becomes damaged or can no longer function properly, there is still no immediate problem to be worried about because one kidney can be sufficient for the body’s needs and survival. Kidney cancer also constitutes around four percent of all cancers and it affects more males that females. So males should be on the lookout for possible signs of kidney problems.

Some symptoms for kidney cancer include having blood in your urine but it may also be invisible. Another symptom is the chronic pain in the back and side of your abdominal region. Or signs of kidney cancers may be felt in the upper abdomen when you feel lumps or fullness in this area. On the other hand, there may actually be no symptoms of kidney cancer in some cases although you already have this disease. For this reason, it is essential that you try to live a healthy lifestyle that ensures you have a disease free existence.

Meanwhile, around fifteen to twenty percent of people who have present tumors removed confirm that the symptoms of having blood in the urine, pain in the abdominal region and the sensation of fullness and having lumps in the upper abdomen all disappear upon the surgical removal of the tumors. Still other symptoms of kidney cancer you should watch out for include having constipation, fever and the loss of appetite. You may also experience feeling nauseous and vomit in some cases. Anemia or low red blood cell count and polycythemia, which are high blood cell count, may also be experienced when you have kidney cancer.

Because the symptoms present in kidney cancer are not as extreme as other cancers and some of the conditions you may experience are quite common, it is rarely that people can detect kidney cancer at its early stages. But you should be particularly careful when you are in the age of 30 to 70 because most cases of kidney cancer occur at this stage.

Overall, you should remember that preventing cancer is always the best possible option because cancer whether it is kidney, lung, or breast cancer, is difficult to cure once it is already present in your body.
