Learn How To Prevent Lung Cancer

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Lung cancer is a malignant disease commonly associated with people who smoke heavily. It is estimated that a higher number of men are suffering from this form of cancer. Lately however, the number of women affected with lung cancer is steadily catching up with the number of men affected with the disease.

Diet is an important measure in preventing lung cancer. The risk of developing lung cancer for smokers and non-smokers alike are lowered when they eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Among the most important fruits and vegetables that should be included in your diet are apples, tomatoes, melons, mangoes, dark leafy greens and onions. Apple and onion are rich in cancer-fighting flavonoids. According to a study conducted in Finland, people who consume more apples are 58 percent less likely to develop lung cancer than those who do not eat apples at all.

Try to add some tomato sauce in your cooking. Research shows that tomatoes, especially cooked ones, seem to exhibit protective properties against lung cancer.

Taking in high amounts of beta-carotenes can also lower the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Carotenoid compounds are found in certain produce like peaches, mangoes, melon, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and green leafy vegetables. Beta-carotene supplement however should be avoided. A study conducted by a Finnish group indicated that an 18 percent rise in lung cancer cases was seen in heavy smokers who were taking beta-carotene supplements. Moreover, the National Cancer Institute researchers also stopped their study on the effects of vitamin A and beta-carotene after smokers who were taking the supplements showed 28 percent more lung cancer than those taking placebos.

Another important measure in the prevention of lung cancer is a routine medical check-up. This should also be accompanied with prophylactic medicines and supplements. An x-ray is necessary especially for those people who smoke and are at the age of 50 and above. A yearly chest x-ray will be especially beneficial for those people who are at high risk of developing lung cancer. A chest x-ray is a preventive measure done to screen for lung cancer. A routine chest x-ray will enable doctors to diagnose lung cancer early so that proper treatment procedures will be implemented.

Aspirin has been shown to ward off lung cancer especially when a dosage of 81 to 325 mg is taken daily. However, you should consult your doctor about the prophylactic advantage of taking aspirin since this form of therapy comes with known side effects.

Selenium that is often found in multivitamin and mineral supplements also shows properties that ward off cancer especially when taken over a long period of time. Some studies show that those who are taking selenium supplements exhibit about 46 percent lower lung cancer rate.

Vitamin C is also good in the prevention of lung cancer. Some studies suggest that people who regularly take 140 mg or more of vitamin C have lower risk of developing lung cancer than those who only get 90 mg or less of vitamin C dosage.

Lifestyle change is also vital in the prevention of lung cancer. People who smoke should consider quitting the habit. When a person stops smoking, his lung cancer risk is lowered by almost half in 10 years.

Finally, the second most common cause of lung cancer is exposure to radon, a colorless gas found in the ground. Test your home for any presence of radon. You can either buy a do-it yourself kit to check for radon which is available in your home supply stores or you can hire a professional to do it for you.

Cancer Treatment

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Just the mention of cancer sends a chill down your spine. And when it comes to talking about cancer treatment (complete cure), one is just left looking around for answers. Yes, it’s a well known fact that there is no fail-proof or definitive cancer treatment for most types of cancer. Unavailability of cancer treatment is what makes cancer so dreaded. Well, it’s not just the unavailability of cancer treatment that makes the things so grim but also the difficulty in detection of cancer.

Cancer treatment and research

Though a lot of research has been going on in the field of cancer treatment, the solution (i.e. fail-proof cancer treatment) has been evading the researchers till now. It’s not that all the research has been unsuccessful. There have been improvements in cancer treatment techniques that are being used and some new cancer treatment techniques have yielded good results; however, there is nothing like a complete cure for most types of cancer. A lot of effort is also being put into developing cancer diagnosis procedures in order to ensure correct and timely diagnosis of various types of cancer. After all, successful diagnosis is the first step towards cancer treatment.

Cancer treatment – old and new methods

The old methods of cancer treatment include things like surgical procedures for removal of malignant tissue and use of radiation and chemotherapy to get rid of the malignant cells and prevent their growth. Apart from these cancer treatment methods, there are other cancer treatment procedures that are being put to use quite effectively - one such cancer treatment is the use of Tamoxifen in hormone based cancer treatment. A number of other new cancer treatment procedures are being developed and tested all the time in an effort to find a cancer treatment that is fully curative and fail-proof.

Cancer treatment, prevention and detection

Since there is no definitive cancer treatment available, the best way to tackle this monster is to take measures for protection against cancer and to device ways of early detection of cancer. The main recommendations for cancer prevention include things like refraining from tobacco, reducing intake of alcoholic drinks, engaging in physical activity / exercise and avoiding exposure to direct sunlight (i.e. UV rays). With regards to cancer detection, the most important thing is to increase your knowledge about cancer, cancer symptoms, cancer treatment etc. It’s important to know that there are many cancer screening tests that you can undergo to help detect cancer in early stages and hence get cancer treatment whilst the things are still controllable.

Skin Cancer Prevention - Sunscreens

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Covering up is your best defense against skin cancer but for those days you’re going to be exposed to the sun, make sure you grab some sunscreen.

Have you noticed how many well known people are having surgery to remove cancer from their face? How about people you know? It is reported that there will be over a million new skin cancer cases this year alone. It doesn’t have to be that way if people would just take the time to apply a generous amount of sunscreen on their exposed skin.

Let’s take a look at the types of sunscreens that are available on the market today.

Types of Sunscreens

The most common and basic is clothing. A tightly woven, lightly colored material is best.

Next would be chemical sunscreens that are available in a variety of forms. They contain one or more of UV radiation-absorbing chemicals. A few of the most common chemical groups that block UVB radiation are known as PABA (p-aminobenzoic acid), PABA esters (padimate O), cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl-p-methoxycinnamate), salicylates (octylsalicylate, homosalate), and anthranilates (methyl anthranilate). That goodness for acronyms. While these all block UVB radiation, the chemical group known as benzophenone (oxybenzone and dioxybenzone) provides the best protection against both UVA and UVB radiation.

Protection

All sunscreens are assigned Sun Protection Factor (SPF) numbers by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This number refers to the sunscreen ability to block UVB radiation. Sunscreen products with SPFs of 2 to 50 are available on the market. Now here is the interesting part, a sunscreen product with a SPF of 15 will protect your skin 15 times longer from UVB than if you did not have sunscreen applied at all but a SPF 30 does not work twice as well. A sunscreen with SPF 30 will only provide another 3%. So think twice before you fork out more money expecting a lot greater protection.

It is also important that the product stand-up to the stress of prolonged exercise, sweating, and swimming. Look for the following three labeling recommendations to help you determine the the most effective sunscreen for your activity:

- Sweat-resistant: gives protection up to 30 minutes during continuous heavy perspiration - Water-resistant: gives protection up to 40 minutes during continuous water exposure - Waterproof: gives protection up to 80 minutes of during continuous water exposure

Remember to reapplied sunscreen after prolonged swimming or perspiring. Also remember that reapplication of a sunscreen does not further the period of protection.

In Conclusion:

I’ll say it again, cover up if you plan on spending long periods of time in the sun, if at the beach or swimming make sure you use the appropriate sunscreen and reapply as needed.

Colon Cleaning UV Light; a Concept

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Colon Cancer is a killer and about the only way to prevent it from killing you early in life is to detect it in the beginning stages in order to treat it. There are many foods you can eat to keep your colon working well and keep out the bad bacteria build up. Eating right and staying away from vices can help you prevent colon cancer. Here is a concept, which may help kill unwanted harmful bacteria in the colon. This idea stems from the new advances and innovations of UV light to clean water. The only problem is how do you get light where the catch phrase says; “. . . Where the Sun Don’t Shine,” well here is a thought that perhaps some savvy science major, academic or innovative medical entrepreneur might want to look into?

UV Light is being used to kill bacteria in water filtration applications. It works so well many sewer treatment plants are using huge units to clear bacteria out of the water prior to allowing it to re-enter the ground water, river or ocean. Hospitals have also used UV light to kill bacteria; there are indeed so many applications for such technologies. Perhaps we ought to look into a small marble sized battery operated UV light Device. One, which can be ingested to clean out unwanted bacteria in the stomach and potentially prevent cancer as well. The small marble size device will pass thru the entire system into the stool, cleaning as it goes. Then the patient can merely eat some yogurt and other various things to put the good bacteria back into the system. I propose that the marble sized unit UV light flash a the best cycle for good bacteria and/or the worst cycle for bad bacteria. Ranges near or at 5-8 Hz.

There are many super small batteries, which can be used and the unit could be as small as an M & M candy or could be ingested with many of these little guys at a time on a relatively empty stomach. It will clean out the stomach, small intestines, large intestines and the colon using this UV light. It could be a very simple process and very inexpensive. Although it may not sound all too pretty the units could be used over and over again, by washing them in a set of small plastic containers and shaking them up. Similar to the old contact lenses; Saline solution and/or rubbing alcohol and then rinsing, turn them on and re-use or trade back into the doctors office for official service, recharging of batteries and complete sterilization. If you would like a more complete report on my idea, contact me.

What You Should Know About Pelvic Exams

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

First you need to know just exactly what a pelvic exam is. It is an exam of the vagina, cervix and uterus that is done by a doctor or some other qualified health care professional. Pelvic exams should start to be done at least a few years after a woman begins to have sexual intercourse or at the age of 21. If young women or teenagers are having abnormal symptoms then they should also have a pelvic exam. Pelvic exams should be scheduled yearly.

During the exam the doctor will insert a speculum that will allow them to see into the vagina better. The doctor may also take samples of discharge or secretions with a cotton swab so that they can run tests for infections or disease which can help in the diagnoses of ovarian cancer.

During the process the doctor will insert two gloved and lubricated fingers into the vagina so they can feel the abdomen externally with the other hand. The doctor does this so they can check for any growth or sensitivity. If you feel any pain during this process you should let the doctor know.

Many wonder if a pelvic exam in painful and while the exam can be a little uncomfortable they are often not painful. Therefore, if you feel pain at any time during the exam you should tell your doctor immediately.

Another common question is how long a pelvic exam usually takes. Many normal pelvic exams are usually quick and will only take five to ten minutes. Pelvic exams are very important to help detect ovarian cancer.

Spindle Cell Melanoma

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Melanoma is a malignant tumor of the melanocytes. These are the cells present in the skin and the eyes. They are responsible for the skin color of a person. Melanoma is considered the most lethal form of skin cancer. An early detection gives the patients a better chance for survival. Melanoma is a principal metastasizing tumor and is described as a primary tumor. One of the forms of melanoma is neurotropic melanoma. It is characterized by spindle shaped cells showing patterns of neuroma.

In neurotropic melanoma, there is an abrasion that produces a cutaneous fibrous tumor. Neurotropic melanoma results in a perineural invasion and expansion along peripheral nerves. Its microscopic picture is characterized by patterns of schwann and spindle cells. They appear as poorly defined margins. It is difficult to diagnose this pattern as it can be confused with the sarcomatous lesions.

Desmoplastic melanomas, spindle cell melanomas and neurotropic melanomas are all malignant tumours of the same cell. Spindle cell melanomas have cells, lesions of which are large and epithelioid or rounded. Epithelioid and spindle cell nodular melanoma have certain features of the lesion. It is a prominent, ulcerated expansive nodule, involving papillary and reticular dermis. It contains elastotic material and shows epidermal collarette.

The lesions are observed on the head and neck region of the patient. They are present as bulky firm fibrous masses of tumor, usually amelanotic lesions. Their microscopic observations show poor, demarcated, infiltrating intradermal tumors, often with sparse cellularity. The tumor consists of elongated spindle-shaped or fibroblast cells, surrounded by mature collagen bundles. Spindle cell melanomas are common. The cells of such lesions are large, epithelioid or rounded. The tumor displays fascicular or storiform growth pattern. Sometimes spindle cell patterns in the dermal component of a melanoma are commonly mistaken for the patterns of a spitz.

Mesotherapy Risks

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Proponents of Mesotherapy emphasize that risks of treatment are minimized because lower doses of compounds are injected into a relatively small area. However, there are certain known and potentially unknown risks associated with Mesotherapy.

The majority of known Mesotherapy Risks are in and around the injection site. Skin may become pigmented or scarred, and these changes may not fade with time. Other changes, such as swelling, pain and bruising, typically subside after treatment. In some people, a severe local reaction to substances injected may result in ulceration and subsequent scarring. There may also be a systemic and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to injected drugs. Infections due to poor injection practices are often reported among patients of unlicensed Mesotherapy practitioners. These infections may require treatment with expensive antibiotics.

There is some concern in the medical community that several compounds commonly used in Mesotherapy have unproven benefits and unknown risks. There are many Internet sites that sell such compounds. However, most of them are located overseas and are therefore outside the jurisdiction of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The purity of compounds sold by such sites cannot be verified. To date, the FDA has not approved any compound for use in Mesotherapy, even if such a compound is approved for other uses. Additionally, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons does not endorse Mesotherapy because it is not a scientifically proven method.

Many Mesotherapy treatments require ongoing maintenance, and the costs involved in such maintenance therapy may be underestimated initially. This can be a financial risk because Mesotherapy is not covered by health insurance plans. There may also be emotional risks, particularly with treatments that require adherence to a diet and exercise plan. If such a plan is not followed, the body may revert to its pre-Mesotherapy appearance, causing stress.

Cancer Curing Using Human Brain Power; Just a thought

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Is the brain and the body in combination strong enough to rid itself of cancer if it is subconscious is trained to do so using electro impulses. I believe it is. Many times people have cancer and are able to beat it, this is happening more and more. Often it happens due to superior strong will, belief and luck. For those researchers trying to figure out a break though maybe there is something in this idea that you might use as a puzzle piece?

I believe there are better ways than nuking the body and seeing which dies first the cancer or the person to combat this problem. This idea may lead to another thought, maybe it is all dead ends, but dead ends are just another discovery of a material that will not work like tungsten on your way to illumination. Failure of a test is actually a success in disguise, example; Edison.

It appears to me that our quest to find power in the brain to win the war on cancer is on to something, in our research we found two very well respected people who are researching a similar idea and have adequate funding to look into this idea. Part of this idea has to do with a diet of the right things to assist the body in assisting itself to beating the cancer war within itself. Now then is it possible to come up with a high-powered diet and neuron nutrients to power up the maximum capacity of the brain for this purpose, all-natural?

For instance I am a former athlete and long distance runner and a long distance runner packs in complex carbohydrates the day before the event, this works good and improves the chances of beating the hills. Winning, visualization, proper training and will is good in bike races or cancer as Lance Armstrong has clearly shown the world. We also know that the stomach takes away energy from the body, so the power level of the brain for fighting cancer must occur when the body is fueled but not using the energy for digesting. This is a significant factor and there have been reports in Mayo Clinic Newsletter and also in the Berkeley Medical Journal with this topic. Can we boost the bodies system and will to win within our own bodies using an increased sports like attitude? Something to think on?

How To Restart or Boost Your Body’s Own Built-in Cancer Fighting Machine

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

As you may know, cancer is second only to heart disease in mortality. An amazing one-third of Americans will eventually die due to some form of cancer (although the information I will share with you literally has the power to change that statistic.)

Ironically, many cancers can be prevented by maintaining a good diet, avoiding carcinogens and reinforcing the immune system.

Once a cancer has established itself, however, more firepower is needed to fight it off. What most people don’t know is that our bodies, in fact every cell of our body, is equipped with the ability to fight cancer.

Just a little more background before we get to that…

The most common forms of cancer are prostate cancer for men and breast cancer for women. Next is bladder and lymphoma cancer for men and uterine and ovarian cancer for women.

Why does it happen?

Well, first we need to understand what happens.

In simple terms, healthy cells only allow normal cellular replication. Unhealthy cells lose control of the replication process and form a clump of growing cancerous tissue.

This clump (called a tumor), if left unchecked, can expand and crowd out normal tissue. As the process advances, the clump breaks into smaller pieces that travel to other parts of the body and repeat this damaging process of uncontrolled replication.

This is, of course, called cancer.

Symptoms begin to appear once this clump begins to interfere with bodily functions or depletes energy resources.

So, to put it simply, cancer happens due to unhealthy cells.

Thus, what we really need to know is: What causes a cell to be unhealthy?

Good question…We have billions of cells and it seems like it would be impossible for everyone of them to stay healthy. That is absolutely true. In fact, cells have a life cycle, they come and go, they start out healthy and then eventually get old and die.

So why doesn’t everyone have cancer?

The truth is, they do.

What! Everyone has cancer? Yes, in the sense that we all have cells in our body which have become unhealthy, some due to natural decline and genetic predisposition, but others due to the effect of the stresses our bodies absorb on a daily basis. Some of these cells then lose their ability to replicate properly and begin to show signs of cancer.

The point is, if you keep the majority of your cells healthy, you will have a healthy immune system and a relatively “clean” body (think: detoxification) which can quickly and naturally attack and eliminate cancerous cells from your body.

In a healthy body, this “cancer fighting machine” is at work 24/7. But in an unhealthy body, it is as if our “cancer fighting machine” stalls and just can’t keep up, giving the cancerous cells time to take root and potentially take over.

In fact, when our body gets behind, when our immune system is not responding quickly, when our body is being overwhelmed by unhealthy cells, we manifest this in a way most of us are familiar with—it is called uncontrolled inflammation.

Most of us have felt the effects of inflammation. The achy, painful to the touch, often swollen tissue that is the result of some sort of injury or insult to the body.

We sometimes notice inflammation when it is working properly, healing a bruise or sprain. However, uncontrolled inflammation is different.

The constant physical and even emotional stress we all endure leads to an inflammation response that is not balanced and which wreaks havoc on our bodies.

Countless scientific journals point to uncontrolled inflammation, “oxidative stress” or “free radicals” as the common denominator in most major disease states and one of the more prominent causes of cancer.

  • NOTE: In 1996 the European Journal of Cancer suggested that free radicals (or uncontrolled inflammation) be listed as an important class of carcinogens (known causes of cancer).

In essence, the stressful, toxic world we face on the outside is taking a toll on us—on the inside. Our cells are maxed out. The physical stresses we encounter overwhelm the natural systems that are supposed to keep us balanced. And, without knowing it, we contribute to our own demise by simply not doing what it takes to get balanced. But it is possible to give your cells what is needed to get balanced?

Yes! And that’s what this article is really about. If you have cancer or if your concerned about curing your unhealthy body, don’t despair.

Now that you understand what is happening on a cellular level, you can act decisively and get your body balanced so it can heal and protect your health.

So, are you ready for the good news that could catapult you past the conventional wisdom and put you back on the road to pure health?

By fighting the root cause most disease states—uncontrolled inflammation–you can prevent and even reverse the debilitating illness you may be struggling with.

You can be healthy, entirely healthy. If you have been involved in healthy living for even a short time, you know that the best defense against free radicals are antioxidants.

Now the question becomes…what is the most effective, the most scientifically tested antioxidant?

You may have noticed, the health food store shelves are chock full of antioxidants.

Like most people seeking a real cure, you have probably spent a few dollars on vitamins, minerals and other beneficial supplements. Although you may have had a measure of success with the variety of supplements you have taken over the years, you may not have experienced a true breakthrough.

Understanding a little known, but increasingly mentioned, molecule produced naturally by our bodies is the key to a true breakthrough in fighting the root cause of cancer.

This molecule is called Glutathione or GSH. The chemical our body produces by itself which has been called the “master antioxidant”.

Yes, GSH is the fuel our “cancer fighting engine” needs to run strongly and smoothly. Fuel that can be produced naturally in every cell of our body.

Understanding what GSH is and how to increase the bodies ability to produce this life sustaining molecule has recently transformed the quality of life for so many. It can make a difference in your life as well.

Since it can be difficult to read and understand too much information at once we have put together a free series of 10 information packed emails. In 10 days from now you will have the knowledge you need to fight uncontrolled inflammation and get your life back.

Alternative Medicine for Treating Cancer

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Cancer is the name given to any illness resulting from one of our body’s own cells growing out of control. There are many processes that control a cell’s growth and division, each of which can go wrong. Several of these control mechanisms need to be damaged before a cell becomes cancerous. There are more than 200 different types of cancers, which are categorized in to carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma and leukemia based on the cells from which they arise.

The principles involved in treating cancer are – either directly destroying the cancer tissues or indirectly destroying them by depriving them of blood supply and/or their nutrition. But the irony is that whatever conventional treatment is used to destroy cancer cells do affect to some extent the normal cells also. They may damage the skin, liver, intestine the bone marrow and other rapidly multiplying cells. Sometimes the effect of the treatment is more devastating than the disease itself.

Role of Alternative Medicine in treating cancer

A larger study of Alternative medicine use in patients with different types of cancer was published in the July 2000 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. It was found that nearly 70% of the patients used at least one form alternative medicine along with the conventional treatment. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) are sponsoring a number of clinical trials at medical centers to evaluate alternative medical therapies for cancer.

Alternative medicine includes therapies like herbal remedies, vitamins, special diets, and acupuncture among others.

* Acupuncture:

-effective in the management of chemotherapy associated nausea and

vomiting and in controlling pain associated with surgery. Now used in a

trial to reduce the symptoms of colorectal cancer

* Homeopathy

* Ayurveda

* Shark cartilage: Being tried in non-small cell lung cancer. it prevents new blood vessels growth

* Hyperbaric oxygen: In patients who had larynx removed for larynx cancer

* Massage therapy: for cancer related fatigue

* Pancreatic enzyme therapy along with specialized diet for the treatment of pancreatic cancer

* Mistletoe extract: for the treatment of solid tumors

* Wheatgrass therapy

* Macrobiotics: The macrobiotic diet is strictly vegetarian and requires you to consume about half of your daily calories from whole grains, about a quarter of your calories from vegetables, and the rest of your calories from beans, seaweed and soups

* Bioelectric therapies

* Moerman’s Anti-Cancer diet

* Hoxsey herbal therapy

* Essiac herbal therapy: Essiac is a herbal tea mixture that relieves pain and reduces the size of tumors. It contains four herbs- burdock, rhubarb, sheep sorrel and slippery elm

* Pau D’Arco herbal therapy

* Chaparral herbal therapy

* Laetrile (amygdalin): a chemical found in lima beans, raw nuts and the pits of many fruits. Amygdalin produces cyanide, which proponents claim kills cancer

* Alkaline diet: such as fruits and vegetables and restricting acidic foods

* Antioxidant found in fruits and vegetables

* Vitamins A, C and E: These are very good anti oxidants

* Detox therapies including Gonzales nutritional metabolic therapy, colon therapy, and Gerson therapy The most successful practitioners integrate various components of the alternative cancer treatments for a better outcome.
